Metadata is 'information about information'. In the document management context, we can say that metadata is 'information about content in the repository'.

Metadata in KnowledgeTree

In KnowledgeTree, metadata is comprised of the information represented by the fields, fieldsets, and document types that are used to classify content in the repository.

Document types, fieldsets, and fields represent the hierarchical classification of metadata. Document types are the highest-level categorization, and fields represent the smallest unit of information.
